Students Raise Money for Classmate Battling Cancer

Colton and Players

In this family, no one fights alone. Especially at Metcalfe County High School. Especially when one of your classmates is facing cancer.

"They ran tests. At first, they thought it was a different thing, but then after a biopsy, they made sure it was cancer," Colton Erwin said.

Colton Erwin is a senior at Metcalfe County High School and was diagnosed with testicular cancer about a month ago.

The day before Thanksgiving break, the Freshman Hornet Hands, a service-learning team at MCHS, sponsored a 3-on-3 basketball tournament to raise money for Colton’s battle.

Eight teams paid $15 each to enter, including one team of three faculty members who called themselves “The Has Beens.”

Students could pay $1 to watch the tournament during their lunch break at school.

Colton, who’s undergoing chemotherapy, didn’t know what his classmates were up to when he got a text asking him to stop by the gym.

"I wasn’t expecting this. I’m really surprised!"

Colton and his classmates enjoyed the tournament.

Turns out “The Has Beens” still have it. For their victory, they took home t-shirts provided by Main Street Custom Apparel.

More importantly, on this day, during lunch break at school, $500 was raised for Colton… by a school with only 455 students.

"It makes me feel great that we have a good community here that really tries to help the people that are going through a lot right now and it really makes me happy to see that."

And Colton’s message for others facing a similar battle…

"Cancer sucks, but as long as you have God on your side, you can do anything."

If you would like to help support Colton, you can buy a t-shirt. Prices start at $15 and orders are due by Dec. 6. Just e-mail geneva.scroggy@metcalfe.kyschools.us.
