July 2020 School Board Meeting

METCALFE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD MEETING

EDMONTON, Ky. (July 17, 2020) – The Metcalfe County Board of Education met in regular session on Thursday, July 16, 2020.

Newly appointed superintendent Josh Hurt started the meeting by addressing the COVID-19 pandemic and how it will affect the start of the 2020-21 school year. He said the district formed a back to school committee initially comprised of a variety of staff members, and it expanded to include parent representatives on the SBDM council. More than 500 people took part in an online survey, and calls were made to every family. In all, the district reached about 70% of student households. The information is still being tabulated.

Superintendent Josh Hurt told the board the district does not yet have a definitive back to school plan ready to release. “We feel like we are zeroing in on what the plan will look like, and I think we should have something for review very soon,” Hurt said. “I know people want some answers and the ability to make plans, and we respect that. With an August 31 start day, we have the ability to be a little more patient than other school districts. We hope that patience pays off.”

On the agenda, board members approved an emergency declaration to fill an open math position at Metcalfe County High School, a sports medicine agreement with TJ Community Hospital, and contracts for physical, occupational, and speech therapy for the 2020-21 school year.

MCES principal Michael Gill announced to the board that the MCES Beta Club placed in the top ten of nine categories at the National Beta Convention. MCHS principal Clint Graham announced that all eight students who took the Kentucky Medicaid Nurse Aide Exam passed. He also congratulated the 13 students who received college credit by passing their AP exams.

The next board meeting is Thursday, August 13, 2020, at 6 pm at the Metcalfe County Board of Education on West Stockton Street.
