Metcalfe County Board Meeting Summary


EDMONTON, Ky. (March 11, 2020) – The Metcalfe County Board of Education met in regular session on Tuesday, March 10, 2020.


Among the shortlist of action items, board members approved an amendment to the 2019-20 school calendar. The last day for students is now tentatively set for Friday, May 22.


Chris Huffman, director of pupil personnel, provided an update on the district’s response to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19.) Huffman said the custodial staff is disinfecting surfaces multiple times daily, and teachers are demonstrating proper hand-washing techniques and reminding students of good overall personal hygiene practices. Huffman noted that should the need arise for an extended closure of schools, district personnel are working on plans that would continue educational services.


The board heard an update from Superintendent Benny Lile about the state budget bill currently under consideration in the General Assembly. Dr. Lile indicated the bill did not contain budget reductions and provided some increases in certain areas.


The board recognized Lydia Bennett as “Student of the Month.” Lydia is a 4th-grade student at Metcalfe County Elementary School and recently placed 1st in woodworking at the Kentucky Junior Beta Convention. She will be one of several students representing MCES at the National Junior Beta Convention in Fort Worth in June.


The board also recognized Junior Beta Club sponsors Ms. Nikki Jolly and Ms. Lindsey Thomas as “Certified Employees of the Month.” Both sponsors were recently recognized as National Beta Educators of Distinction and received Educator Excellence Awards at the state convention.


Ofc. Michael Taylor was recognized as the “Classified Employee of the Month.” MCES principal Michael Gill said, “Ofc. Taylor is more than a police officer; he is a mentor, father figure, counselor, friend, cafeteria helper, hall monitor, and school leader.”

The next board meeting is Tuesday, April 14, 2020, at 6 pm at the Metcalfe County Board of Education on West Stockton Street.
