EDMONTON, Ky. (April 1, 2022) – Metcalfe County Schools has selected Rachel Dial, assistant principal at Metcalfe County High School, as the district's new director of instruction. The appointment follows the retirement announcement by current Director of Instruction Jamie Howard.
Dial is a graduate of Metcalfe County High School and Western Kentucky University. Before returning to Metcalfe County High School as an assistant principal in 2020, she spent 18 years teaching at North Metcalfe Elementary, Edmonton Elementary, and Glasgow Independent Schools.
"I'm looking forward to building collaborative relationships across the district to ensure student success," Dial said. "By supporting staff in an instructional capacity, I will help provide a high-quality education for the students and the community. I also want to focus on student transitions from building to building and ensure a positive student experience during these educational milestones."
Superintendent Josh Hurt said, "Mrs. Dial will bring a wealth of experiences to her new role as a director of instruction. During her time as an assistant principal at Metcalfe County High School, she has shown a great ability to shape instruction and curriculum to meet the needs of individual students. Her unquestioned work ethic makes her the ideal candidate to step into this challenging position."
Dial and her husband Shane have two children, Thad, a junior at the University of Kentucky, and Peyton, a senior at Metcalfe County High School who plans to attend Western Kentucky University in the fall.
Dial succeeds Jamie Howard, who is retiring in June after serving 28 years with the school district. Howard also graduated from Metcalfe County High School and has spent her entire educational career with Metcalfe County Schools. She was named a director of instruction in 2010 and previously served as a principal, counselor, and teacher. Howard was named KASA Administrator of the Year in 2019.
"The students and staff of Metcalfe County Schools will always be family to me," Howard said. "I will miss seeing them on a daily basis, but I look forward to volunteering with the school district and looking for new, creative opportunities to serve the Metcalfe County community."
Superintendent Hurt said, "Mrs. Howard is wrapping up one of the most distinguished careers imaginable. Her dedication to this school system, community, and families and children living here has been unwavering and exceptional to the greatest degree. Obviously, we will miss the professionalism, ability, and insight that Mrs. Howard has brought as an instructional supervisor, but we wish her well in retirement and know that her service to our community will never cease."
Howard was instrumental in creating the "Ring the Bell for Literacy" program. She was a two-time past president of the Edmonton-Metcalfe County Chamber of Commerce and currently serves on the Metcalfe County Public Library Board. Howard and her husband David have two children, Drew and Carlie, a senior at MCHS who plans to attend the University of Kentucky this fall.
