The 2017-18 school year is officially underway for Metcalfe County teachers, staff, and administrators. This year's Opening Day program was held at the middle school on Aug. 22. District employees were invited to hear a special presentation by Kentucky Department of Education Commissioner Dr. Stephen Pruitt.
Commissioner Pruitt talked to the audience about several four-word phrases that changed his life. He started with "I am a Teacher," and talked about how he started his career as a high school chemistry teacher and coach. He concluded with "Never Just an Educator," explaining the overall impact everyone has on the lives of children and students as they grow up.
Commissioner Pruitt also talked about the importance of effective leadership and the Every Student Succeeds Act. He said the ESSA, signed by President Obama in 2015, will give states more flexibility in how student success is measured while holding schools accountable for closing achievement gaps between groups of students. He said his goal is to reduce that gap by 50% by 2030.
After his presentation, Dr. Pruitt stopped by the Donut Shop at the Old School Cafe. He and his wife, Cecilia, were treated to some special pastries prepared by MCHS student employees.
